Purrs 4 Peace Week 23-Lay down the guns

Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Studies have shown that homicide and suicide rates tend to be related to firearm ownership levels. The gun ownership per capita in the U.S. exceeds that of other industrialized nations and our homicide and suicide rates reflect it.

According to the American Bar Association’s Special Committee on Gun Violence:

“The rate of death from firearms in the United States is eight times higher than that in its economic counterparts in other parts of the world.” Moreover

“The overall firearm-related death rate among U.S. children younger than 15 years of age is nearly 12 times higher than among children in 25 other industrialized countries combined.”

I know some will shout “Second Amendment” gives them the Constitutional right to bear arms. But I prefer to remember the Declaration of Independence and its recognition that there are certain unalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I think the right to life trumps the right to bear arms.

Wake up humans. Guns solve nothing.

Nonviolence doesn't always work - but violence never does. ~Madge Micheels-Cyrus

Purrs 4 Peace Week 21- Announcement: Peace Now

“There never was a good war or bad peace.” - Benjamin Franklin

The statistics say it all:

US and Coalition Fatalities in Iraq = 4670 (source: icausualties.org)

US and Coalition Fatalities in Afghanistan = 1492 (source: icasualties.org)

According to the website Iraqbodycount.com, 92,392 to 100,867 Iraqis have died since 2003 under Operation Iraqui Freedom. Some 10,557 Afghanis have also been killed during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Confucius Cat says there can be no true peace obtained from war. Bring our brave sons and daughters home now.

“Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Week 21 of Purrs 4 Peace details are as follows:

  • Week twenty-one’s appointed time is Sunday, November 1, 2009.
