Movie Review - Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince.

There are NO stars in Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince.

What happened?

I must say that the Harry Potter books are some of my favorite books of all time. J.K. Rowling did a masterful job of creating memorable characters we care about, of building a world that is fantastic and fanciful yet tinged with reality, and creating a good versus evil plot that rivets us even as it arcs over 7 novels. The movies on the whole have done a good job of bringing these books to life, from the screenplays to the casting and the production design.  Note: I positively love the character of Snape and the fabulously talented Alan Rickman does him so well.

The sixth movie is as usual a good adaptation...but I'm disturbed. There are no STARS in this one. What happened to Crookshanks and Mrs. Norris.  These wonderful cats are nowhere to be seen. Not even a rat in sight since Scabbers turned into Peter Pettigrew back in the Prisoner of Azkaban story. Ugh. So disappointing. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the secondary characters: Harry, Hermione and Ron.

Anyway, the movie seems long a long set-up for the final story (which I understand is going to be divided into two movies). Hopefully, the director will make sure that the STARS are back for those two.

I give it three 1/2 meows.

Purrs 4 Peace - Week 8 Announcement- It's about the little ones

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”

-Buddha

Too many humans allow their anger to burn bright and they lash out at their kids.  They destroy themselves by destroying the peace of their family. Certainly, such violence scars the next generation making it all too possible that child will grow into an adult who carries on the family “tradition”.

According to Unicef, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 40 million children below the age of 15 suffer from abuse and neglect, and require health and social care.  More disturbing statistics can be found in an article on violence against children at the Unicef site.

 http://www.unicef.org/protection/index_violence.html

The epidemic of abuse and neglect must end.

Week 8 of Purrs 4 Peace is directed to ending violence towards children.

  • Week eight’s appointed time is Sunday, August 2, 2009.
  • Participants should purr for three minutes commencing at 9:00 a.m. EDT (U.S.) which is 2:00 p.m. (14:00 hrs.) BST in the U.K.
  • The cat’s human staff should assist their cats with the project by stroking and nuzzling the cat at the appointed time.
  • Please post your cat name and the country you purr in at www.confuciuscat.blogspot.com  as a COMMENT if you are participating in this historic project. (posting a link to your own website-if you have one-is encouraged.) Or let me know by message on twitter or facebook.
  • Posting purrs on facebook and twitter is encouraged, since it inspires purring in others, but not required.  On twitter please use #purrs4peace in your tweets.

CALLING ALL SHELDONS

On May 16th I posted "I Coulda been Sheldon" which was about my having been found/rescued at Old Sheldon Church cemetery in South Carolina and how I coulda been named Sheldon as a result. I'm afraid I kinda poked fun of the name Sheldon...although I will point out that my mummy loves that name and that's what she wanted to call me.

Anyway, in July a cat with the name Sheldon, who was also found in the same location, posted a comment. I hate that I might have hurt his feelings with my post due to the unintended insult to the name Sheldon, but I loved knowing that me and my sister Pieface aren't the only kitties to come from that location. There's a feeling of kinship with Sheldon...which I emphasize is a fine name. Unfortunately, Sheldon did not include any contact information. By the way did I say that Sheldon is the name only the handsomest of cats merit?

PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CALLING ALL SHELDONS... Confucius Cat would love to hear from any cats named Sheldon ----which is the most distinguished of names by the way---or not named Sheldon who were found/rescued from Old Sheldon Church in South Carolina.

The name Sheldon connotes intelligence and wit and therefore I'm certain he will see this.
Please Sheldon....come out and play.

Purrs 4 Peace - Week 7 Thank You.

12:03 p.m. Stop purring.

One of my first friends on Facebook was Arsène Le Pépère, a handsome cat living in France (See photo on right). Arsène has been a supporter of Project Purrs 4 Peace since week one, giving us his “ronrons” (french purrs) strong and loud.  Arsène and his “patronne” have not only been thoughtful and supportive friends, but also have wonderful taste in books, movies and music. For example, they recently played “Misty” for the FB fans sung by the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald.

Arsène: Votre amitié et soutien des ronronnements pour le projet de paix sont considérablement appréciés. Merci, mon ami! (Hope I said all that correctly.  My French is a bit rusty.)

The list of purrticipants is growing fast and long, please forgive me if I have somehow missed your name (or worse... misspelled it). Let me know, however, since I want to thank you personally:

Welcome to Project Purrs 4 Peace Week 7- Purrs not Guns

Guns have not only a cost our society directly in the way of lost lives.

Dwight Eisenhower expressed this so well in 1953 when he said: Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.

So Confucius Cat say: invest your time and money in Purrs not Guns.

PURRS 4 PEACE-Week 7 Announcement: Purrs Not Guns

The world is a dangerous place to live,
not because of the people who are evil,
but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
— Albert Einstein

Whether or not we disagree on the issue of gun control legislation, I believe we can all agree that the violence perpetrated by people with guns is abhorant. Each day in America alone. an average of 85 people die from gun violence and another 191 are critically injured.

We cats, and the people who love us, are going to do something about it.

Week 7 of Purrs 4 Peace is directed to ending gun violence.

  • Week seven’s appointed time is Sunday, July 26, 2009.
  • Participants should purr for three minutes commencing at 12:00 noon  EDT (U.S.) which is 5:00 p.m. (17:00 hrs.) BST in the U.K.
  • The cat’s human staff should assist their cats with the project by stroking and nuzzling the cat at the appointed time.
  • Please post your cat name and the country you purr in at www.confuciuscat.blogspot.com  as a COMMENT if you are participating in this historic project. (posting a link to your own website-if you have one-is encouraged.)

Thank you - Purrs 4 Peace Week 6

3:03 p.m. Stop purring.

Here in week six of the project, I am again grateful for the cats (and honorary cats) who participate. I believe that if nothing else we are bringing awareness to the need for a more peaceful existence. My first reaction to violence against me or someone I love is to want to return the violence, but the more I see the extended consequences of giving into these visceral reactions, the more I am convinced that such a path can never be the right one. For peace to prevail we must practice peace.

Almost since week one of this project Bruce the Cat (see photo at left) has been a supporter, Bruce has a fantastic blog called Bruce’s Paws (www.BrucetheCat.blogspot.com) with gorgeous photos and entertaining posts. Bruce says that he is named for racing legend, Bruce Leven since his “boss” used to be one of Leven’s crew chiefs. Bruce says he is always willing to lend a helping paw and that has certainly been true for Confucius Cat. Bruce has not only helped with Purrs 4 Peace by purring at the appointed time but also in helping to publicize the event in advance. Thank you Bruce. He can be followed on Twitter @BrucetheCat

Week 6: Purrs 4 Peace - DO IT FOR THE TROOPS

Welcome to Project Purrs 4 Peace Week 6 - DO IT FOR THE TROOPS.

This week we purr to bring peace to the troops. We may disagree on politics, but I think we can all agree that when peace fails, the troops bravely put themselves on the frontline of the violence that results.

Violence begets violence. The death toll from the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, exceeded 2973. Then the terrorist violence was met with violence in return.  The resulting military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq have taken the lives of more than 5750 U.S., U.K., and other coalition country troops. I will not even try to report an estimate of the thousands of civilian deaths. This cycle of violence must stop.

Therefore, we purr this week to bring peace to the troops.  Their bravery deserves the reward of a peaceful and happy life, not a permanent sacrifice.

2:59 Get ready to Purrrrrrrr.

SET.

PURRS 4 PEACE-Week 6 Announcement: May the troops have peace

The last five weeks of Project Purrs 4 Peace have been a fantastic success. The number of cats (real and honorary) participating have grown and have included cats in the United States, U.K., France, Italy, Serbia, Netherlands, Norway, Venezuela, Brazil, Fiji, China and more.

When nations fail in efforts to peacefully resolve conflicts with one another and war breaks out, it is the troops who bravely place themselves in harms way on the front line of violence. The troops can pay the highest price possible for the lack of peace. Therefore, for week six we will concentrate our purrs in a new direction, toward peace for the armed forces.

Here are the details for Week Six:

  • Week six's appointed time is Sunday, July 19, 2009.
  • Participants should purr for three minutes commencing at 3:00 p.m. EDT (U.S.) which is 8:00 p.m. (20:00 hrs.) BST in the U.K.
  • Last week many (including yours truly) posted their purrs during the event on their facebook pages and on twitter. This is encouraged, since it inspires purring in others, but not required.

As an aside I note that a recently released scientific study just confirmed what we cats have always known: we can control human behavior through our purrs. Project Purrs 4 Peace is 52 weeks of simultaneous purring by cats (and honorary cats) worldwide for three minutes each Sunday.  We CAN achieve peace in the world through the greatness of Cat. Science has proven it!

Top 5 Cat professions- If we had to work...which we don't

As a cat lucky enough to live in the lap of luxury in the lap of my mummy, I definitely do not have to work. Everything I could want or need is provided me on demand...and I demand a lot. Nevertheless, it occurs to me I would be good at many jobs.

Honorary mention:  Baker-This only gets honorary mention because we are good at kneading the dough but not that great at putting it in the oven.

The top 5 are:

Number 5:   Cat burglar -  Come on, this one is even named after us felines.  Especially effective at stealing food.

Number 4:  Comedian - Naturally able to make humans laugh...even when they're in a bad mood.

Number 3: Sprinter - When we're at top speed in a run through the house we could break world records...if only the humans would time us.

Number 2:  Modeling - We cats are extremely photogenic and are able to strike many poses. Some of us try to avoid having our picture taken....that's just an act. We secretly love it.

And the number 1 profession is: Yoga instructor - Still working on downward dog however...the bark is particularly challenging.

Fortunately, I was able to find a photo illustrating me performing 3 out of the top 5 professions. No one can get a picture of me as sprinter.

Purrs 4 Peace: Week 5 - Purr it forward

Welcome to week 5 of the 52 weeks of Project Purrs for Peace.

Again this week we are purring to bring total peace and love to every animal. Cruelty and violence toward the furriest beings must stop. Loving and caring for animals is the best way to learn to love in my humble opinion. When a human takes care of a pet, they have the opportunity to give and receive unconditional love...to show compassion and caring for a being that is largely at their mercy. To show true humanity and greatness of spirit.

So lets spread the love....spread the peace starting with the animals. Purr it forward!

Purrs 4 Peace: Week 5 Thanks

6:03 p.m. Stop purring.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your purrs.

I believe the first to respond to my call for purrs in WEEK ONE of this project was the beautiful (inside and out) Mog “Mogliavelli” Lickorish and her wonderful human staff (Female and Male) in the U.K. Mog very kindly gave me permission to include her photo (at the left here) from which you can tell she is very regal as well as generous and loving.

Mog had a difficult time in her earlier years and was not treated as she deserved. All changed when she found and rescued her Staff. They obviously recognized a good thing when they saw it and submitted to her orders immediately. Although she says she is still trying to train them, they obviously dote on her as is her catly due. She rules over what sounds like an excellent territory that includes outside perches and indoor luxury. Thank you so much Mog and Staff for your fierceness for peace, particularly to the animals of this world.

Mog can be followed on Twitter @MogliavelliMog

Purrs 4 Peace: Week 5 Announcement

“How we behave toward cats here below determines our status in heaven." ~ Robert A. Heinlein

If only all humans recognized the truth in that quote. How can anyone call expect good things to come to him/her in this life or the next if they are cruel to an animal...the most innocent of beings.

Last week our purrs were directed at ending animal cruelty and we had more purrticipants than ever before. The feeling of love and peace coming from the simultaneous purrs was powerful and reverberated throughout the cyberspace of blog, facebook, and twitter as well as in the real world at large.

I am happy to report that just a few days ago Facebook finally deleted two groups devoted to cruelty to, and killing of, cats. Many thanks for this achievement go to Tippy Kat who spearheaded a group who worked on FB daily to achieve this result. One can only wonder at why it took FB so long. Nevertheless, there are still two more groups that Tippy and the members of his group are protesting. Just as disturbing or more so are the stories of cruelty and neglect of cats, dogs, and other animals that we all hear about daily.

Again, I say: Who can this planet be at peace unless the furriest of us have peace.  Violence against animals at the root from which will spring peace for the whole planet.

Therefore, our work is not done.

Week 5 of Purrs 4 Peace is directed again toward eradicating cruelty to animals. Purring it forward. Taking one little area of our world and making it a cruelty free zone, then spreading that outward until that zone encompasses the entire world.

  • Week five’s appointed time is Sunday, July 12, 2009.
  • Participants should purr for three minutes commencing at 6:00 p.m. EDT (U.S.) which is 11:00 p.m. (23:00 hrs.) BST in the U.K.
  • Last week many (including yours truly) posted their purrs during the event on their facebook pages and on twitter. This is encouraged, since it inspires purring in others, but not required.  On twitter please use #purrs4peace in your tweets.

PURR IT FORWARD!

Movie Review - The Proposal

Romantic Comedy is the perfect Friday night kind of film.  You laugh, you feel the love...it's nice. The Proposal with Sandra Bullock fulfilled the Romantic Comedy criteria:

1. Heroine you love. Sandra is always loveable...although in this one she doesn't start out that way. Instead, she's a very unlikable boss. But you know pretty quickly she's going to undergo a change.
2. Handsome hero. Ryan Reynolds is appropriately hunky.
3. Comedic antics. Particularly the scenes with the exotic dancer and the "post shower" were quite funny.
4.  Quirky secondary characters.  One word: Betty White...Okay that's two words. But she was fantastically funny. And she's an animal lover. What's not to adore there.
5. Animals. Here I have a problem. The family pet was a cutie pie dog. Come on Hollywood. What a cliche. Why not a cute cat. We cats are much more adorable and emotive.

The Proposal was a fun night at the movies. Sure it was predictable. We, the audience, knew where this story was going, but we definitely enjoyed the journey.

I give it three meows.

Purrs 4 Peace: Week 4 - Purring for the Furry Ones

Welcome to Project Purrs 4 Peace: Week 4 - Purring for the Furry Ones

For true world peace to exist it must extend to the smallest and weakest beings.  So this week we are dedicating our peacemaking purrs to quelling violence against, and cruelty to animals.

I believe that the test of the depth of a human soul is in how that human is able to feel about and treat animals. For the most part animals, particularly pets, are smaller than humans and are vulnerable. Any human that cannot love and nurture an animal is soulless.

Soulless and cruel people are at the heart of violence on all levels. Studies show that serial killers begin their murderous path by killing animals. Unless we can stop violence toward animals there will never be peace among the humans themselves.

As I said in my announcement post: If the smallest and furriest of us cannot be at peace than who can be?

PROJECT PURRS 4 PEACE-Week 4 Announcement: NO MORE CRUELTY

“The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

Mohandas Gandhi

Given the violence against animals I have heard about in recent weeks, and the seeming ambivalence of many to that violence, the United States is severely lacking.  Indeed, the entire world needs help with its “greatness” as it regards the treatment of animals.

This week I would like to devote our purrs to quelling cruelty toward animals. If the smallest, most innocent, and furriest of us cannot be allowed to live in peace, then who can?

PURRS 4 PEACE EVENT:

  • Week four’s appointed time is Sunday, July 5, 2009.
  • Participants should purr for three minutes commencing at 3:00 p.m. EDT (U.S.) which is 8:00 p.m. (20:00 hrs.) BST in the U.K.
  • Last week many (including yours truly) posted their purrs during the event on their facebook pages and on twitter. This is encouraged, since it inspires purring in others, but not required.

Spread the meow to all your cat - and honorary cat - friends. Let’s show our cat greatness again this week.

The greatness of cat = the greatness of the world.
