Purrs 4 Peace Week 30: Unchained Dog Melody

"The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them, that's the essence of inhumanity." ~ George Bernard Shaw, Irish Playwright and Essayist

Today it was below freezing...and it’s going to be below freezing for the next 4 days. This in an area where it’s normally very mild. Most of the Midwest is below zero. The body experiences cold as PAIN. Imagine if you were forced to sleep outside, on the freezing ground, chained to a stake with nothing to keep you from the unrelenting cold. It is precisely this pain, this suffering that thousands of dogs are forced to endure.

Here in Savannah, Georgia there was recently a case in the news involving a 64 year old grandmother named Ann Wylene Lam who braved the disapproval of the law and the anger of the owner to unchain a poor starving dog who was chained and basically abandoned in the owner’s backyard...probably as some sort of cheap security system.

“It was skinny so I came back to the house and I got treats and I started throwing treats every day for two weeks," said Lam. "I kept walking by and never seen any food or water in its dish, just dirt." There were marks and sores on his skin. Finally, Lam says she couldn't take it anymore. "He wouldn't even lift his head to eat and I called my friend and I said what am I going to do. He's not eating, won't pick up his head, it's like he gave up," said Lam. So she broke his chains and took him home with her. Unfortunately, the dog died despite attempts to nurse him back to health....and Lam was charged with a misdemeanor when the owner of the dog called the police. Common sense did finally prevail when the misdemeanor charges were dropped. Moreover, the owner was prosecuted for the tethering and for animal neglect. Sadly, he was only fined for his crimes.

I applaud Lam...she is a brave, compassionate woman. The world needs more like her. Unfortunately there are too many like the owner. And that is why we purrrrrrrrrr.

"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men..." ~ St. Francis of Assisi, Roman Catholic friar, founder of the Franciscans order

Hurray for Lam! And that some justice prevailed, albeit slowly and not in proportion to the crime!

I only hope, I mean REALLY HOPE that for the unjust and evil in our world "what goes around comes around" and their receive their treatment in their turn.

Maybe it's not our place to revenge, maybe it is. I just hope there is justice and that the evil animal abusers will perish.

Confucius, we are a day late and a dollar short for Sunday but want to lend our wholehearted support to your effort. This weeks purr hit so close to home because our momma battles for animals all the time, especially in the winter time.
