Purrs 4 Peace Week 36 Announcement: Happy Spay Day

A cat or a dog without a home suffers terribly and lives a significantly shortened life. The life span of a feral cat for example is just 2 years. Each year over four million cats and dogs who cannot be placed in adoptive homes are put down in the shelters of America due to pet overpopulation.

An unspayed dog can give birth to up to an average of 20 puppies per year and the average cat can have 18 kittens. Thus, another cycle of suffering commences.

Spay Day was created by the Doris Day Animal League in 1995 to promote the cause of spay and neutering to prevent these unnecessary deaths. In 2006 the Humane Society of the United States joined in to promote the last Tuesday in February for this international day of action. According the the HUSUS site, more than 1,457,200 animals were spayed or neutered through the program during its first 15 years. The 16th annual Spay Day is February 23, 2010.

Spay/Neuter programs are vital to eliminating unnecessary suffering for our homeless brothers and sisters. Get involved with a Spay Day event in your community...And to help with this important cause....We will purrrrrrr.

Week 36 of Purrs 4 Peace details are as follows:

  • Week thirty-six’s appointed time is Sunday, February 21, 2010.
  • Participants should purr for three minutes commencing at 3 p.m. EST (U.S.) which is 8:00 p.m. (20:00 hrs.) GMT in the U.K.
  • The cat’s human staff should assist their cats with the project by stroking and nuzzling the cat at the appointed time.
  • Please post your cat name and the country you purr in at www.confuciuscat.blogspot.com as a COMMENT if you are participating in this historic project. (posting a link to your own website-if you have one-is encouraged.) Or let me know by message on twitter or facebook.
  • Posting purrs on facebook ( Acolytes of Confucius Cat or as friend to Alley Mason) and twitter (@ConfuciusCat) is encouraged, since it inspires purring in others, but not required. On twitter please use #purrs4peace in your tweets.
