Purrs 4 Peace - Year Two - Month 2: Thank You

This month I would like to express my great appreciation and thanks to a good facebook friend and longtime Purrs 4 Peace supporters Charlie Homer and family. Charlie is a beautiful Newfie girl (i.e., a Newfoundland breed of canine) with a gorgeous black shiny coat. Charlie’s FB page says that her political views include supporting anyone who provides treats…I’m not one to like politics but that is one political position I can get behind!

Charlie lives with her mummy and daddy in a small cottage in Cheshire in the U.K. Charlie’s Mummy is giving up work after Christmas and her Daddy is a pilot. Ooooh being a pilot sounds exciting…and gives Charlie’s Daddy some time to be with his sweet dog while Charlie’s Mummy is working.

Their family included lovely cat named Ellie who had been adopted from an area sanctuary. Ellie had been so badly beaten that the vet at the sanctuary had to amputate one of her legs. Charlie’s Mummy and Daddy adopted her just a week later when they came to the facility and asked for a cat who would not easily find a home. *Four paws applauding such a wonderfully compassionate couple. *Unfortunately, only 18 months later Ellie passed over the Rainbow Bridge due to massive heart failure. Charlie says, “We love all animals of all sorts and left to Mummy we would have a million cats and dogs.” What a wonderful Mummy!

A big thank you nosebump and kitty kiss to Charlie and her family for their for the compassionate and loving example and for their generous friendship and support for Purrs4Peace. You are all appreciated.

Purrs 4 Peace - Year Two - Month 2: Blood donation is the ultimate gift

Giving blood is the giving life. It is the ultimate generosity. In doing some modest research for the purrs this week I discovered that the requirements for most locations that accept animal (Cat or Dog) blood donations are roughly the same:

· An animal that is friendly and likes to be around people.

· A dog must weigh over 50 pounds and a cat must weigh over 9.

· Must be current on vaccinations and not taking any medications except for heartworm preventative or flea/tick treatment.

· Cats must be indoor only and negative for feline leukemia and FIV.

· No heart murmur.

· Cats should be between 2 and 6 years; Dogs between 1 and 6 years of age.

· Never received a blood transfusion.

· Never been pregnant.

Please contact the donation facility near you for specifics as to their donor requirements.

Purrs 4 Peace - Year Two - Month 2: Announcement - Blood equals Life equals Peace

After much ado (i.e., internet access problems) Year Two, Month Two of Purrs 4 Peace is here. Again we purr this month regarding RESPECT for the right of all animals and humans to merely LIVE! Let’s purr for life.

There is no greater gift of life than to give blood. This month I would like to highlight and honor human and particularly ANIMAL blood donors. When she was three my sister Zelda (a canine but still a good sister nonetheless) was extremely ill with a disease called hemolytic anemia where the immune system attacks and kills the body’s own red blood cells. Zelda was so ill by the time the she was diagnosed that she was very near death. My mummy had to rush her more than 90 miles to a state of the art animal hospital operated by the veterinary school at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan. Over the course of the next two weeks Zelda required three blood transfusions! Without the generosity of those dogs and their owners who donated blood at MSU my sister would not have been with us giving love and bringing joy for the last 12 years.

From the website of the MSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital Donated red blood cells and fresh frozen plasma are used for:

anemias from chronic disease

surgeries

traumas, such as hit by car

immune-mediated issues

bone marrow issues

coagulopathies

low protein

some toxicities, like snake venom or rodenticide ingestion

Their donors are volunteer cats and dogs owned by MSU staff, students and area residents. They also adopt 3-5 dogs per year that live at the hospital and donate blood monthly while looking for a permanent home. If you can adopt one of these wonderful life-giving dogs, please visit the “IN HOUSE DONORS” section at www.cvm.msu.edu/hospital/special-facilities/blood-donor-program They have about 50 dogs and 12 cats in their donor program and are always looking for more. The cutie in the photo above is BINKY, one of the current donors.

In 2009 MSU used: “377 units of canine packed red blood cells
199 units of fresh, frozen canine plasma
and
101 units of feline red blood cells
12 units of fresh, frozen feline plasma.”

We salute and purr for the continued life-giving success of the MSU and other animal blood donor programs.

The appointed time is Sunday September 19, 2010 at 3 p.m. Eastern (United States time) which is 8 p.m. in the U.K.

Participants should purr for three minutes.

The cat’s human staff should assist their cats with the project by stroking, nuzzling and generally catering to their cat.

Purrs 4 Peace - Year Two - Month 1 Thank You

For the first month in year two of Purrs 4 Peace I am happy to express my special thanks to some very special supporters of the project: Will Appleby and his family who purr from their home in Illinois, United States.

Will’s humans, Don & Maria have been married for twenty years (wow- that is an example of loving commitment to admire in this time of temporary relationships.) Although Don & Maria have no human children they have a large family of furry ones which includes the very handsome Will (photo above), Alaskan Malamute Sasha and 19 other cats (who have all been fully vetted. Will and his brother Andy and Toby for instance were rescued and then hand-raised after being dumped in a trash can as day old kittens.

It all began in 1993 when, after they left the military, Don & Maria began taking in feral cats and strays as well as foster animals who for one reason or another never went to another home.

It is particularly appropriate to highlight them this month when we purr in support of the human and animal right of LIFE. I am awestruck at the generosity of spirit, the abundance of love and the wondrous humanity that it takes to provide LIFE to so many of our feline brethren who might otherwise have perished in shelters or in the wild.

Over half of the 19 cats are over the age of 15 years. One is mostly blind, one is profoundly deaf, one is crippled, one has a neurological disorder and one is crippled. (Awww. What marvelous humans these must be to care for special needs kitties).

Will and his family blog on Facebook, Twitter and Myspace, promoting good will, raising awareness for important causes, conducting prayer circles for those in need and making memorials for those who have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. The purrs and prayers of Will and his family were much appreciated by me during my recent health crisis. The support was so vital to me and mum.

Thank you dear friends not only for your support of the Purrs 4 Peace project and the friendship you’ve shown me, but also for creating a living example of the kind of compassionate, loving and thoughtful beings this world needs in order for PEACE to prevail.

Next month (September 5^th) I will begin listing individual participants in YEAR TWO. For now please accept my abundant thanks to all those that participated. Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Peace and love to all.

Purrs 4 Peace - Year Two - Month 1: Right of Life

As long as people will shed the blood of innocent creatures there can be no peace, no liberty, no harmony between people. Slaughter and justice cannot dwell together.

It is widely agreed approximately 6-11 million humans died during the holocaust of the Nazis during WWII.

Another genocide in Darfur killed an estimated 400,000.

Ethnic cleansing in what was Yugoslavia estimated at 200,000 human lives lost.

What would happen if 6-8 million PEOPLE were euthanized each year for their own good or the good of the community (because no one wanted to take care of them).

Horrible! Reprehensible! I believe all would agree there is a fundamental RIGHT for humans to LIFE. So when we learn of such abominable actions as those of the Nazis we recognize them for what they are: CRIMES. These are slaughters we would and did fight to stop. But what of the animals?

Holocaust is defined as a thorough destruction involving extensive loss of life especially through fire.

There is a holocaust in progress among the dogs and cats of this world. Every 8 seconds an animal is euthanized in a Shelter in the United States….One LIFE is ended. It is estimated that 6-8 million are killed in the United States alone EACH YEAR. I was horrified to find out that not only are these animals killed but many shelters still use a “gas chamber” for the process. In 1996 the United States Courts overturned the use of gas chambers to execute convicted murderers (i.e., death penalty) recognizing it was too cruel in that the suffering before death was inhumane. COME ON PEOPLE! We won’t allow murderers to die a cruel death but we readily accept that it’s okay for innocent animals? IT MUST END.

Please support “no-kill shelters” and the spay/neuter programs in your area. PLEASE act to end use of gas chambers for euthanasia But more importantly let us not meekly accept this ongoing slaughter of the innocents. Support animal rights…the first and pre-eminent of these being right to LIFE.

Purrs 4 Peace - Year Two - Announcement: Human and Animal Rights Declared

In June of 2009, the Purrs 4 Peace project began with an idea…a flight of imagination…a dream of a headline:

Peace breaks out...attributed to simultaneous purring of cats worldwide.

Well why couldn’t it happen? We all have observed the instant calming effect inspired by the purring of cats. So began 52 weeks of simultaneous purring by cats and honorary cats worldwide for the sake of Peace.

To usher in the PEACE we purred about causes and barriers to PEACE.For eradication of puppy mills and catteries we purred. To stop War we purred. Ending the barbarity of dog fighting we purred. For the victims of natural and unnatural disaster we purred…….And while I believe we have done much good and sent a mighty force of positive energy into the universe, we have not yet achieved world peace. And since humans obviously cannot achieve PEACE on their own, I hereby announce YEAR TWO of the Purrs 4 Peace project.

Year 2 of the Purrs 4 Peace project will take place on the first Sunday of each month at 3 p.m. Eastern (in the United States) for 12 months.

In considering this second year it occurred to me that the root of much of the lack of PEACE in this world is a failure to recognize and respect each other Therefore, I make my Declaration of Fundamental Human and Animal Rights.

We (Mummy and I) hold these truths to be self-evident, that all humans and ANIMALS are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights….

FIRST among these is the right to LIFE……..

Purrs 4 Peace Week 52: Thank You

I am proud to introduce you this week to a very enlightened friend and supporter of the Purrs 4 Peace Project: Jennifer Bolgar who resides in London, England. Mum and I thought Jennifer was our kind of human when we saw her religious views as listed on Facebook was “Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster”. But we were CERTAIN Jennifer was a QUALITY human when we saw her dedication to animal and human rights issues by her postings. Now I would like to turn this over to Jennifer to let her tell you a bit about herself with only an occasional comment from me.

When Ally (AKA Confucius Cat) asked me for a few paragraphs about myself I thought gulp, what do I say? Well, seeing as this is Purrs4Peace I thought I'd start off by introducing you to our gorgeous cuddlepuss, Eric. (pictured above- What a cutie pie!). He is a total affection tart and purrs all the time, not just during Purrs4Peace! We first met Eric when we fostered him for the Cats Protection League (http://www.cats.org.uk/). He was rescued as a very young adult, living on the streets. He hadn't been chipped or neutered, and wasn't wearing a collar. Whilst fostering we fell head-over-heals in love with him so we ended up adopting him or, as I like to say, he adopted us! If you're considering fostering but are worried about getting too attached, like we did, if you end up adopting you are still giving a cat a loving forever home. I'd encourage anyone considering getting a cat or a kitten to go to your local shelter and adopt one, there are so many cats and kittens needing forever homes that there is no need to buy from a pet shop and risk supporting kitten mills. (Confucius Cat couldn’t agree more. *four paws applauding*)

As for me, I'm passionate about the struggle for peace, social justice, anti-discrimination and equal opportunities for all, both at home and abroad. We have one life and one Earth, and it is up to all of us to work together to improve it for all. (Now that is a motto we can all get behind. Yay Jennifer!)

At a neighbourhood level I help to run our local Freecycle group, which has nearly 11,000 members. The Freecycle Network™ (www.freecycle.org) is made up of 4,810 groups with well over seven million members world-wide.
