Purrs 4 Peace - Year Two - Month 1: Right of Life

It is widely agreed approximately 6-11 million humans died during the holocaust of the Nazis during WWII.

Another genocide in Darfur killed an estimated 400,000.

Ethnic cleansing in what was Yugoslavia estimated at 200,000 human lives lost.

What would happen if 6-8 million PEOPLE were euthanized each year for their own good or the good of the community (because no one wanted to take care of them).

Horrible! Reprehensible! I believe all would agree there is a fundamental RIGHT for humans to LIFE. So when we learn of such abominable actions as those of the Nazis we recognize them for what they are: CRIMES. These are slaughters we would and did fight to stop. But what of the animals?

Holocaust is defined as a thorough destruction involving extensive loss of life especially through fire.

There is a holocaust in progress among the dogs and cats of this world. Every 8 seconds an animal is euthanized in a Shelter in the United States….One LIFE is ended. It is estimated that 6-8 million are killed in the United States alone EACH YEAR. I was horrified to find out that not only are these animals killed but many shelters still use a “gas chamber” for the process. In 1996 the United States Courts overturned the use of gas chambers to execute convicted murderers (i.e., death penalty) recognizing it was too cruel in that the suffering before death was inhumane. COME ON PEOPLE! We won’t allow murderers to die a cruel death but we readily accept that it’s okay for innocent animals? IT MUST END.

Please support “no-kill shelters” and the spay/neuter programs in your area. PLEASE act to end use of gas chambers for euthanasia But more importantly let us not meekly accept this ongoing slaughter of the innocents. Support animal rights…the first and pre-eminent of these being right to LIFE.

Purrs 4 Peace Week 50: Homes for Shelter Animals

Each year 6 to 8 MILLION cats and dogs are cared for in animal shelters in the United States alone. An even more horrific statistic is that 3 to 4 million of these are euthanized because no homes can be found for them.

One huge factor behind this abominable number of homeless furry babies is the failure of our society to implement spay and neuter of pets so that the birth of puppies and kittens is planned rather than accidental. Spring is the time when one sees so many tiny kittens struggling to survive on the streets. The lucky ones find homes directly or at least are rescued to shelters where they are up for adoption. It is really heartbreaking when one finds them too late.

And recently the poor economic conditions have rendered not only people but animals homeless. Many animals are being given up by their families because they cannot afford to care for them or because they themselves have lost their homes and cannot keep them. Worse. Some animals are given up by their families because they find them inconvenient of no longer fun. My mummy is horrified each year when with the graduating class at our local college there is a wave of newly homeless animals as the students who move away and on with their lives leave behind the tiny hopeless animals who loved them for four years. How they can do this....well, they must be lacking some element of real soul.

So today we purr for the homeless shelter animals. We purr that they find homes filled with love and care and safety....because every cat and dog deserve to be loved.

Purrs 4 Peace Week 20: No more prejudice in animal adoption

Every animal deserves a loving home...even the black ones.

In the animal world discrimination is rampant. Black dogs are less likely to be adopted than white ones. Black cats, are disproportionately more likely to be euthanized than other colors because they are not adopted. Some shelters suspend adoption of black cats around Halloween because those cats might be adopted for the wrong reasons. All this seems to relate to ridiculous fears and myths. Apparently, superstition can get you killed.... especially if you’re a black cat.

Some bad luck superstitions about black cats:
* Having a black cat turn its back on you.
* Scaring or driving away a black cat from your property.
* Walking under a ladder after a black cat has walked underneath it.

Meeting a black cat early in the morning.

Some thought the black cat associated with witchcraft or evil....ridiculous.

Some lesser known good luck superstitions:

* Possessing a black cat.
* Having a black cat greet you at a door.
* Having a black cat enter your home.
* Meeting three black cats in succession.
* Touching a black cat.

In Britain and Japan, if a black cat crosses your path, it’s good luck. In the U.S. and some other European countries, it’s bad luck.

I’m with Groucho. Let’s purr away prejudice and fear and give black cats - and cats of every other color- the love they deserve....Oh and don’t forget the dogs.

Purrs 4 Peace- Week 16: Sanctuary for the Innocent

According to on-line statistics, over 70 million animals in the United States alone are subjected to animal testing each year. They are scalded, poisoned, blinded, maimed, and genetically manipulated. They endure traumatic injury, live vivisection and more in the name of science and research. Mice, rats, rabbits, apes dogs and cats...each a living, feeling, being who suffers fear and pain.

In the opinion of Confucius Cat, animal testing should be banned. These tests are CRUEL. Most are performed without painkillers. Most result in permanent injury and death. When a small number of humans subject animals to this pain and suffering, they create a stain of guilt upon the whole human race. ANIMALS HAVE RIGHTS and are not placed on this earth for the use of humans. There can be no peace in the world while the pain of these animals cries out into the universe. Worse, most of these tests NOT NECESSARY since they are done merely to protect commercial companies from lawsuit. Moreover, the same tests may be performed by multiple companies who do not share information. The tragedy of this is compounded by the fact that animal tests are NOT RELIABLE. Humans are different from animals. So a medicine or cosmetic that is safe and effective for animals may not be safe or reliable in humans. (See www.BUAV.org). Moreover, there are effective ALTERNATIVES TO ANIMAL TESTING such as human volunteers. (See www.stopanimalstest.com). These alternatives are often less expensive and more reliable.

This week’s purrs are dedicated to stopping the practice of “pound seizures” which is the selling of cats and dogs by animal shelters. That pets who were supposed to be protected within SHELTERS should be subjected to the torture of animal testing and research is unconscionable. Animal shelters should be a sanctuary. A place where the dogs and cats can be safe until their forever home is found.
