Purrs 4 Peace Week 29: Kindness is Contagious

Welcome to week 29 of Purrs 4 Peace.

“No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. It seems to me that there has been a serious erosion in civility and kindness in our society in the last decade. Not only in politics, but in day to day living. It is a rarity anymore for someone to open a door for another person. Road rage, hate speak on every radio and television, bullying in cyberspace.....the list could go on and on unfortunately. And at what cost?

I believe that the erosion in kindness is not only dangerous to our outer peace but to our inner peace.

Studies have shown that exhibiting kindness not promotes more kindness, i.e., one kind act leading to another. People who witness kind acts by others tend to commit kind acts themselves.

But kindness is not only altruistic. Acts of kindness can be good for one’s health. Studies have found that those who helped others are healthier. Allan Luks, Author of “The Healing Power of Doing Good”, discovered a “helper’s high” in his study of over 3000 people. This “helper’s high” reduced stress and released endorphins which are natural painkillers in those who regularly acted with kindness. Luks also found other health benefits such as reduced depression and enhanced immune systems.

“Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate.” - Albert Schweitzer

So today we purr for an end to hostility and misunderstanding. we purr for a renewal of the spirit of kindness in ourselves and in the world at large. We purr for a healthy bodies and healthy world. We purr for peace.
