Purrs 4 Peace Week 35 Announcement: Baby Seals Clubbing is not Sporting

May all that have life be delivered from suffering.
-- Buddha

The Winter Olympics is set to begin in Vancouver, Canada on February 12th. But the image I have of Canada this year won’t be of smiling olympians, snow covered mountain peaks, and athletic glory. In my minds eye I am seeing the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seals in a hunt sponsored and sanctioned by the Canadian government. Indeed, Canadian government (Dept of Fisheries and Oceans) has made a decision to allow commercial slaughter of 2220 baby seals on Hay Island around February 8th. What a way to welcome the world to your country....with blood and pain.

And a larger hunt is expected to begin in March after the Olympics end.... a massacre expected to exceed 200,000. Gentle baby seals are shot or clubbed. Many are bludgeoned before they have had their first solid meal or learned to swim. Sealers are known to hook the seals, in the eye, cheek or mouth to avoid damaging the pelts. And if anyone thinks that these animals are not sentient and cannot feel pain they should see video of the mothers, forced to watch just a few feet away as they cry out when their pup is killed.

This....the largest slaughter of marine animals in the world...has to be stopped!

What can we do?

* A number of organizations have information as to supporting a ban on their sites including:

PETA http://www.peta.org/feat-canadaSealHunt.asp

The Humane Society of the United States http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/seal_hunt/

  • Boycott Canadian products and don’t spend your tourist dollars in Canada. ***I have tons of Canadian friends and it pains me to recommend this.
  • Write/e-mail NBC who is broadcasting the Olympics. If they believe they might lose viewership of this event, it is possible some pressure may be exerted.
  • Do not buy any product with fur or even questionable faux fur.
  • Write the Canadian Prime Minister.

Snail mail address: The Right Honourable Stephen Harper
Prime Minister of Canada
Office of the Prime Minister
80 Wellington Street
Ottawa, ON
Canada K1A 0A2

Email address: pm@pm.gc.ca

****A recent poll indicated over 70% of Canadians oppose the seal hunt. It is apparently only politicians and special interest business that support it.

Last...but not least....we purrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Purrs 4 Peace Week 21- Purrs beget Peace

"We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace."
William Gladstone

October is the deadliest month in the history of the war in Afghanistan. 40,000 more troops suggested? For what purpose? It seems to me that after the atrocity of September 11, 2001, our invasion of Afghanistan was intended to bring the perpetrators, the criminal masterminds, to justice. The United States commenced a war against two countries to essentially capture murderers. That would be akin to starting a war on the State of Wisconsin to try to bring about justice for the crimes Jeffrey Dahmer committed in Milwaukee.

Are we as a nation safer because of the carnage that has been wrought in these two countries. Most in the intelligence community and military say no. Instead those who would hate the U.S. and want to do us violence have increased in numbers. The injuries and deaths inflicted have only hardened new hearts against us. And isn’t this understandable. Violence begets Violence.

"People try non-violence for a week, and when it 'does not work'they go back to violence which hasn't worked for centuries.'

~~Theodore Roszak...

Peace is the only way to peace. It is not easy, but there was a reason that Jesus advocated turning the other cheek and to love your enemies. Jesus said to do good to those who hate you. There is a reason that Buddha advised the more evil done to you the more good do in return.

Confucius Cat says represent PEACE yourself and insist on PEACE from those who represent you.

Purrs 4 Peace- Week 15: A Generous Life Well Lived

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared” - Buddha

Welcome to week 15 of Purrs 4 Peace

This week’s purrs are devoted to GENEROSITY. So much of the discord and unrest in this world is caused by a spirit of lack and the attendant instinct to hoard. Fighting springs from fear and lack. Peace springs from love and abundance. When we see the example of a life lived with a spirit of generosity and giving, we can clearly see that the cause of peace in this world is advanced.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give” - Winston Churchill.

This week’s purrs are dedicated to a life lovingly and generously lived: our friend Pepi Price (@Pepismartdog pictured above) who passed over the Rainbow Bridge on September 16, 2009 at age 18.

Pepi was an older dog of 12 when he was adopted by his human mum Michele who says she chose him because of his eyes. Certainly anyone that has seen Pepi in person or by photo (especially a photo of him zipping about in his pram) can’t help but notice the joy for living and the exuberance of soul that shone from him.

Pepi not only shared his love with his family and friends. He and his mum generously gave of their time at countless events to promote the cause of adoption for older pets. Their last special day together (at the insistence of the vet) was just the day before his passing. His mum’s description of a happy and barking Pepi dressed in board shorts, shirt and cap, (and even doggy cell phone) during their talk about the cause is truly inspiring. No doubt there are many fur kids who now have loving and safe homes as a result of Pepi sharing his story.

Pepi spread love during his life and his legacy will continue through all those he touched with his generous life well lived. We should all be able to say the same of ourselves.

Anyone that would like to donate to payment of Pepi's vet bills may contact @Georgetheduck on Twitter for information.
